Colonial crafts
(Book)
In COLONIAL CRAFTS your young readers will take a journey into the 18th century & meet the craftspeople who created useful works of art with handmade tools. They will visit the workshops of the wheelwright, cooper, founder, peruker, shoemaker, milliner, gunsmith, & many more. They will find out how the artisans learned their trades through many years of apprenticeship. They will gain an appreciation for the goods made two hundred years ago that are still beautiful today. They will learn why the craftspeople were an essential part of the colonial community. This book introduces crafts from Colonial America through those found in the many reconstructed craft shops in Williamsburg, Virginia. Two others in this series dealing with colonial life are: A Colonial Town: Williamsburg and Tools and Gadgets (both 1992).
