Description
When writers and neighbors Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner decided to collaborate on a novel, they wound up coining one of the choice phrases of the latter 19th century: the "Gilded Age." Taken from Shakespeare's play King John, the phrase came to symbolize the gaudy, cheap and excessive nature of the post-Civil War years. In the novel, a rural Tennessee family repeatedly tries to grow rich in the new post-Civil War business climate. The book is rife with the speculators, hucksters and nouveau riche who came to characterize the era.
